Randy was involved in the delivery of emergency services for over thirty-four years as an EMT, paramedic and police officer.
In 1998 he was hired as a police officer / paramedic and retired in 2024 as a Deputy Director of Public Safety / Police Captain in charge of the Investigative division and threat management. He was also a team commander on the Washington County SWAT team. In 2014 Randy co-founded two community-based, multi-disciplinary Threat Advisory Groups (TAG) in the Twin Cities metro area. He also created a Case Management Unit (CMU) in his own department that specializes in the long-term management of mental health cases and cases of concern for targeted violence–the goals of which are intervention, prevention, mitigation, and getting folks back on healthier paths.
Randy has attended Gavin de Becker and Associates’ Advanced Threat Assessment and Management Academy in Lake Arrowhead, California. He is also a member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) and specializes in the assessment and management of targeted violence and threats. Areas of interest include: school, house of worship, workplace, and domestic violence as well as and stalking. Domestic violence lethality prevention and stalking prevention are his primary focus and he is working within the criminal justice system to encourage the use of threat assessment to efficiently focus limited resources and to give extra care and attention to situations that present an increased risk for violence and / or lethality.
In 2015 Randy became one of the first Certified Threat Managers (CTM) in the country through the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. From 2020-2024 he served on the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) as a Task Force Officer (TFO)/Threat Management Coordinator (TMC) Liaison. He can be reached at randy@mcalistertm.com
